Effect of Sargassum sp. extract on preventing abdominal adhesions in female rat
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Studies have shown that abdominal adhesions occur due to an oxidative stress by ROS. Sargassum sp. extract contains many antioxidative compounds that might be utilized to interrupt this process. This study intends to study the efficacy of Sargassum sp. extract on preventing abdominal adhesions. Methods: In this study, 20 female rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 receive Sargassum sp. extract and group 2 served as controls. Intra-peritoneal ketamine was administered for anesthesia. Multiple scratches were made in the peritoneum and then, the abdomen was closed. After two weeks, a sample of the peritoneum was sent to the laboratory for adhesion grading and histo-pathological examination. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS. Results: There was significant difference in adhesion found between the two groups (p<0.05). There was also a significant difference regarding vascular proliferation between two groups. Conclusion: Present study shows that applying Sargassum sp. extract can tremendously reduce post operation abdominal adhesions.

full textEffect of hydroalcoholic extract of caraway on thyroid gland structure and hormones in female rat
Caraway is one of the medicinal plants used for digestion problems, however, it has been reported that the long term use of this plant in large doses might cause hyperthyroidism symptoms such as leanness, hair loss, severe sweating and tremulousness. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of caraway on the level of thyroid hormones and morphologic ...
full textNovel Powdered Anti-adhesion Material: Preventing Postoperative Intra-abdominal Adhesions in a Rat Model
BACKGROUND Although laparoscopic surgery has decreased postoperative adhesions, complications induced by adhesions are still of great concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-adhesive effects of a novel powdered anti-adhesion material that can be applied during laparoscopic surgery in comparison with other anti-adhesion materials. METHODS Our novel powdered anti-adhesion mat...
full textPreventing postoperative abdominal adhesions in a rat model with PEG-PCL-PEG hydrogel
BACKGROUND Poly (ethylene glycol)-poly (ɛ-caprolactone)-poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG-PCL-PEG, PECE) hydrogel has been demonstrated to be biocompatible and thermosensitive. In this study, its potential efficacy and mechanisms of preventing postsurgical abdominal adhesions were investigated. RESULTS PECE hydrogel was transformed into gel state from sol state in less than 20 seconds at 37°C. None...
full textNovel thermosensitive hydrogel for preventing formation of abdominal adhesions
Adhesions can form after almost any type of abdominal surgery. Postoperative adhesions can be prevented by improved surgical techniques, such as reducing surgical trauma, preventing ischemia, and avoiding exposure of the peritoneal cavity to foreign materials. Although improved surgical techniques can potentially reduce formation of adhesions, they cannot be eliminated completely. Therefore, fi...
